The Spaniards, the largest consumers of fish in the European Union

75% of Spaniards eat fish two or three times a week compared with 70% of Europeans who say eating fish once a week, which would put Spain at the forefront of the countries of the European Union in consumption of this food.

The data correspond to the first survey on consumption of fish and the role of the fisheries sector in the European Union, a study by Europêche, organization representing 80,000 fishermen and 45,000 fishing boats from nine countries of the European Union, including partners of the Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA).

The survey also reveals that 84% of Europeans prefer to eat fish at home, rather than in a restaurant, and 73% buy in the supermarket, although these establishments do not offer enough variety. Moreover, 68% of European consumers would like to know more details of the origin of the fish and their method of capture, which, according Europêche, contribute the introduced obligation, in December 2014, to include this information on the label. In addition, 54% say that sustainable catch is a decisive factor in the purchase.

In regard to the review of the fisheries sector, 81.3% of Spaniards think that plays a vital role in feeding the world's population and 91.9% more support calls for the Government to this industry, compared with 71% and 84% of Europeans respectively.

Europêche has conducted this survey in the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Denmark and the Netherlands, with the launch of iFish, its new information portal on the fishing industry to provide information on their economic and environmental impact as well as their role in the sustainable provision of healthy foods.
